| One of the Bridge Team members approached me with an idea to make their winning dovetail connection designs even stronger. When a dovetail is under loading, the stress concentrations in the corner notch can be very high. In order to reduce the corner stress concenrations, we developed a technique of manufacture involving curved corners cut on the Sodick A350 wire EDM. The curve-cornered dovetails tested 20% stronger than the original design under impact testing. This increase in strength is significant and might help them to win future competitions. |
